Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭
Songkhla Lake
Thailand's largest natural lake stretches approximately 80 kilometers from its estuary northward, with its widest sections spanning 20-25 kilometers. Fed by waters from the Banthat and Sankalakhiri Mountain Ranges, this remarkable ecosystem serves as a convergence point for numerous canals before emptying into the Gulf of Thailand.

Source: Bangkok Post
The lake's unique character stems from its three distinct water conditions: fresh, brackish, and saltwater zones. During November-December flooding seasons, abundant freshwater pushes saltwater toward the gulf. Conversely, dry periods see minimal freshwater inflow, allowing saltwater intrusion that creates brackish conditions throughout much of the lake.
Several islands dot the landscape, including Ko Yai, Ko Si, Ko Ha, Ko Kaeo, Ko Mak, Ko Nang Kham, Ko Rap, and Ko Yo, offering scenic destinations for year-round boat excursions. The December-March period proves particularly spectacular, as massive waterfowl migrations transform the area into a birdwatcher's paradise, with thousands of species seeking seasonal refuge in this diverse aquatic environment.
