Fun Fact

Thai locals actively avoid sun exposure

Source: ASEAN NOW

People in Thailand go to great lengths to shield themselves from direct sunlight. This stems from both cultural beauty standards and health concerns, as skin cancer rates are rising in the region.

You'll often see locals wearing long sleeves and pants even when temperatures hit 35°C. While this might seem uncomfortable, it's a practical approach to skin protection that many have embraced. The cultural preference for lighter skin tones also drives these sun-avoidance habits.

Whether it's seeking shade, using umbrellas, or choosing covering clothing, Thai people have developed various strategies to minimize sun exposure while going about their daily lives.

Thailand: Culture & History 🇹🇭

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn: Thailand's Scholar Princess

Source: Tom Phatinawin

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn is one of Thailand's most beloved royals. Born in 1955 to the late King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit, she has dedicated her life to education, charity work, and preserving Thai culture.

A Brilliant Student

The Princess showed her love for learning early on. She started school at age three and was already writing poetry by age twelve. Her academic achievements were remarkable - she finished high school as the top student in the entire country, then graduated with top honors from Chulalongkorn University in history and languages.

She didn't stop there, earning two master's degrees and a doctorate in Development Education, which would shape her future community development work.

Teacher and Scholar

Since 1980, Princess Sirindhorn has been teaching history at Thailand's military academy. She worked her way up from lecturer to Professor and department director, even holding the military rank of General. Students and colleagues respect her not just for her royal status, but for her genuine expertise and dedication to education.

Helping People Everywhere

What sets Princess Sirindhorn apart is her hands-on approach to helping people. She visits remote villages, monitors projects personally, and ensures aid reaches those who need it most.

Her major initiatives include:

  • Building schools in remote border areas

  • Preserving plant genetics and creating seed banks

  • Developing technology programs for disabled people

  • Running nutrition campaigns for public health

Her work extends beyond Thailand with educational programs in Laos and Cambodia, scholarships for Chinese students, and cooperation projects with several countries.

Keeping Thai Culture Alive

The Princess works tirelessly to restore ancient monuments, preserve artifacts, and promote classical Thai music and dance. Thanks to her efforts, many cultural treasures that might have been lost forever are now protected for future generations.

Recognition and Personal Life

Universities worldwide have honored her with honorary doctorates, and scientists have named new species after her. But perhaps the greatest recognition comes from ordinary Thai people who see her genuine care and hard work.

Despite her busy schedule, she enjoys reading, writing travel books (proceeds fund student scholarships), playing traditional Thai instruments, and sports like swimming and hiking. She speaks several languages including English, French, and Chinese.

A Life of Service

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn represents the best of what royalty can be - someone who uses their position to genuinely improve people's lives. Her story shows that true nobility comes from a lifetime commitment to serving others and making the world a better place.
